Japanese Landscapers Turn Kei Trucks Into Tiny Gardens

In Japan, landscapers showcase their skills by transforming the beds of tiny kei trucks into elaborate miniature gardens in an annual competition. The beautiful landscapes feature trees, moss, stone pathways, water features, fish, benches, and other elements inspired by traditional Japanese gardens. These compact creations (6.5' x 4.5') are especially fitting in Japan, where space is limited and many city residents have little or no room for a garden of their own.

Kei truck garden competitions are now held in several regions of Japan, bringing together professional landscape companies and even horticultural schools. The goal goes beyond creating something beautiful; it provides younger landscape professionals a chance to sharpen their skills, demonstrate their creativity, and show the public just how much can be accomplished in a very small space. As you might imagine, thousands of visitors attend these events and vote for their favorite designs, making the tiny gardens a fun way to celebrate both the craft of landscaping and the possibilities of gardening in unexpected places.
