Hello, I'm Dan Goldman. My wife Candice and I founded Sunborne Nursery in 1976. We always enjoy telling the story of our company, as there are many things that make Sunborne unique.

Our story starts back in 1972. After graduating from UCLA, with a degree in Philosophy and studying law at Berkeley, Candice and I were married. We joined my family business of chicken ranching for egg production in San Luis Obispo, California. On the property there were about 50,000 square feet of vacant chicken houses. One day our bottled-water delivery man suggested converting them into greenhouses. Good idea! Initially we considered growing mushrooms or Fuchsias. Upon telling my father that we had decided on Papayas, he anxiously brought in a horticultural consultant. The consultant confirmed my father's gut reaction, but thought that converting to greenhouses was a sound idea. He directed me to the Ornamental Horticulture department at California Polytechnic University, San Luis Obispo, where I enrolled in 1974.

At Cal Poly, I studied under Dr. Bill Noble and it was through his tutelage and enthusiasm for tropicals that I decided to become a grower. On a field trip to Gallup and Stribling Orchids of Santa Barbara, I had a chance to speak with the president of the foliage division. He said there was a shortage of propagation material and suggested that we go into producing rooted cuttings. He offered to provide the stock plants, and then became our first customer.

In 1975, Sunborne Nursery became a reality. We specialized in growing Pothos, Cissus and Ficus Benjamina. Sunborne became instrumental in the California foliage industry by establishing Hawaiian large leaf Pothos, Jade Pothos and Cissus Mandiana.

Since a majority of our cuttings and finished stock plants were sold in the San Francisco Bay Area, we decided to move the nursery to Northern California in 1989. From converted chicken coops, the move was into a "state of the art" greenhouse complex built by the city of San Francisco in conjunction with a sewage treatment plant. The heating system was designed to utilize the methane gas by-product that made possible unlimited free heat. What a grower's dream!

In 1991, we dedicated the nursery to producing and distributing interior foliage plants for interiorscapers. My wife, Candice, whose background is in Art, has played an important part in the aesthetics and design of Sunborne. Together, we have found our calling in the beauty and environmentally enriching qualities of the tropical plant world.

Our philosophy at Sunborne is very simple. We are in business to serve the interior plantscaper. Customer service is what Sunborne is about. All of our products and services are selected and developed to make your job easier. Our staff is a team of outstanding professionals who take responsibility for results and share the company's commitment to quality and service.
